Presidential Nominations
The nomination of our beloved presidential candidate, Mama Miria Kalule Obote, has been rescheduled for Thursday December 15, 2005 at 3:00 PM. The UPC party president was scheduled to be nominated today Wednesday December 14, 2005 but due to procedure anomaly, her nomination was deferred to Thursday December 15, 2005.
What Happened
When UPC presented the nomination documents to the electoral commission, some of the signatures of nominees were rejected by the electoral commission on grounds that they did not comply with the nomination guidelines. This is largely because some of the signatories signed the nomination papers for Districts where they are not registered as voters. The requirement is that the signatories must be registered voters in the District before they can sign as nominees for the candidate for that District. This confusion arose as a result of recent creation of new Districts thereby impacting on the Geographical location of some of the registered voters who signed to nominate Mama Miria Obote.
What Is Being Done About It?
The party leadership this afternoon swung into action to rectify this set back. The party has rectified the situation in compliance with the Electoral Commission requirements. Mama Miria Kalule Obote is set to be nominated at 3: 00 PM on Thursday December 15, 2005. Following the nomination, Mama Miria Obote will address a huge rally and launch the UPC Manifesto for 2006 presidential campaign. Despite the minor set back of today, the party is as determined as ever and victory is eminent.
More updates from the nomination exercise to follow.
